Onsen with a private bath

You have the bath to yourselves — no other bathers. It's the easiest way in if you have a tattoo, if you'd rather not undress in front of strangers, or if you're bringing children.

“Has a private bath” and “you can book it without staying” are two different facts.
onsen pass checks them separately.

What we check

  • Whether you can book the private bath alone, without staying overnight
  • Whether you book online, by phone only, or first-come on the day
  • Whether you can book it with a tattoo

Areas

Hakone

About 85 minutes from Shinjuku on the Odakyu Romancecar
25 onsen

Sapporo

About 40 minutes from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo Station on the JR Rapid Airport
8 onsen

Beppu, Kusatsu and Tokyo are next.

We work through them one onsen at a time, so it takes a while. Each area goes live once its checks are done.

What we don't check

We don't check same-day availability, how busy it is, unscheduled closures, how many private-bath slots are left and the final price of a private bath. Policies can change without notice — please confirm with the onsen when you book and when you arrive. onsen pass provides information only: we don't make bookings, and we can't guarantee you entry.

At most onsen the price of a private bath changes with the room type, the day of the week and the season, so we don't keep a price list. Check the amount through the official-site link on each onsen's page.

For the water's stated health effects and contraindications, please read the notices posted at the onsen — we don't cover them. You can report an error in anything listed here.
